TOMS RIVER SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL (TRHS) FISHING INDIANS

May 23 2025 update

The Toms River South Fishing Indians, proudly representing NJBBA, are making waves in the high school fishing circuit! These dedicated young anglers are all active members of the NJBBA, showcasing their skills and passion on the water.

They've already had a strong showing in recent tournaments:

  • American Anglers Tournament (LBI, Individual): Kicking off their season.
  • Governor's Tournament (Island Beach State Park): A fantastic performance, securing 2nd place in the high school division with impressive catches of a 29-inch bluefish and an 18-inch fluke.

Their consistent hard work has paid off with an impressive record at the Governor's Tournament's high school division: two 1st place finishes, two 2nd place finishes, and one 3rd place finish!

Looking ahead, two teams from the Toms River South Fishing Indians will be competing in the American Anglers tournament on May 31st on LBI.

How You Can Help

To continue their success and support these talented student-anglers, the team is seeking donations. Any contribution, big or small, helps with equipment, tournament fees, and travel.

If you'd like to donate or learn more, please contact Paul Harris at #84.

February 26th, 2025 Update

                            FISHING INDIANS

The Toms River South High School Fishing team is sponsored by NJBBA. All the team are now members of NJBBA with the help of donations from: New Jersey Salt Water Flyrodders, past President Bob Lick, and donations of fishing gear from Fred Norton, Geo Weekes and Dave Paulick, Wane Ross and from items purchased at a flea market that we went to.

We now have 15 teenagers on the team! We will be fishing a few tournaments this spring including: the American Anglers tournament on April 26th on LBI, fish at Seaside Park, and at the Gov’s tournament at IBSP on May 18th. The Fishing Indians usually place in the Gov’s tournament – in 2024 they placed 2, 1st place 1, 2nd place 1, 3rd place.

Anyone that would like to support the team contact me

    October 1st 2024 update

The Toms River, High School fishing team, The Fishing Indians, are getting ready to fish two tournaments. The first is the American anglers in Seaside Park on Oct 6th and the 2nd will be at LBI on October19th. This is the team that finished 2nd in the Gov's tournament sponsored by NJBBA. Wish us luck!!

Spring 2024  update - The NJBBA sponsored fishing team from Toms River High School ‘The Fishing Indians’ met after school started in September. We had 4 freshman sign up and they replaced the seniors that graduated in June. We participated in both American Anglers Tournaments this fall. One was held in Sea-side, NJ on October 1 and the other on October 28 at Long Beach Island, NJ. Everyone gave their best and fished hard but there were no acceptable fish caught to enter in either tournament. We will get together and try to fish after school hours. We look forward to competing in a few tournaments during the school year. We’ll have a table at the NJBBA’s fishing flea market this coming January, 2024. Please come out, stop by, say Hi, and support the team.

Our High School South Fishing Team would like to give a special Thanks to George Weeks, an old member of the NJBBA for donating his fish-ing gear to the South Toms River High School Fishing Team. His fishing poles will be at our table this coming January at the Pete D’Alessio Memorial NJBBA 2024 Fishing Flea Market. They are all one-piece Australian-fishing blanks and there will be a lot of other gear that was donated by other members to support the team. Hope to see you there!   Paul Harris #84

Fishing Indians Update May 1st 2022

On May 1st, Our High School Fishing Team, the Fishing Indians competed in the American Angler Surf Fishing Tournament. The tournament took place on Long Beach Island at Brant Beach. There was a 5 person minimum but we could only get 4 students to fish that day. There was only one skate caught all day but the students that attended had a good time. On May 15th, the Fishing Indians competed in The New Jersey Governor’s Cup Surf Fishing Tournament. There were 6 students who attended that day. The tournament started at 6:30 AM and at 6:45 AM we caught one short bass and that was it for the rest of the day. It was quite foggy but pretty comfortable weather-wise and everyone enjoyed the day. We are hoping to fish some tournaments coming up this fall. It’s great that the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association supports the High School Fishing Team which in turn encourages the youth to enjoy surf fishing and keep the sport going strong in the future.

    Fishing Indians Update June 2021

Our high school fishing team fished their 1st tournament for the year, “The American Angler’s Tournament” on May 2nd, 2021. The tournament was held on Long Beach Island at Brant beach. Due to the virus, it was hard to get the whole team together, but we had a few students come out to support the team. We fished hard but were unable to put any points on the board for this tournament.

We were able to get 7 students from the fishing team to fish the “New Jersey Governor’s Cup”. Our team fished hard all day with a dropping tide but to no avail, we could not put a fish on the score board. Congratulations to Manasquan High School for their 1st place win. We were hoping to continue our winning record but that just didn’t happen. We are looking forward to fish some tournaments scheduled in the fall.

    Thank you,

    Paul Harris #84

“FISHING INDIANS”   UPDATE NOV, 4th 2020

The Toms River South High School Fishing Team fished the American Anglers individual tournament in Seaside Park on Sunday, November 1st. The 7 team members participating were not able to put any fish on the scoreboard but member Andrew Parshall did catch a 23 ¾’’ striped bass.

I would like to welcome aboard new NJBBA member Jason Putkowski, who is a police officer at Toms River South High School. Jason has being working with me and the team for the past 2 years and he has attended all team meetings and tournaments.

We are hoping that in 2021 things ease up so we can fish more tournaments. If anyone has any fishing equipment that they would like to donate to the Toms River South High School “Fishing Indians” just call me – all items will go to the TRSHS Fishing Team.

     Thanks,

     Paul Harris #84
